Members of the American Legion Post 180 completed a building expansion that will make handicapped access easier and afford visitors to the Post an exciting patio addition.

The expansion complies with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and includes a handicap access ramp, vestibule and entrance way.

American Legion Post 180, 2860 S. Kinnickinnic Ave, is a corner stone in Milwaukee’s Bay View community, hosting the American Legion, the Sons of the Legion, Women’s Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The addition’s cost was paid for exclusively from Monday night bingo sessions hosted by the American Legion families and volunteers. The new vestibule has a commemorative brick wall inscribed with names of veterans, families and friends. Benefactors can be honored with a special brick in their name. Interested parties who would like an inscription included in the commemorative wall may contact American Legion Post 180 at info@GWbayviewpost180.com for details. Donations accepted for brick inscriptions are used exclusively to support the goals and objectives of the American Legion.

“This is an exciting addition for our building” exclaimed the Legion Commander Charles Cortte. “Not only does it create a beautiful patio to enjoy dining and relaxing, but more importantly it affords our physically challenged veterans and guest much easier accessibility.

The Post members and leadership felt is was incumbent on them to finally eliminate any barriers to entry. The patio is level, with the street and opens into the restaurant and tavern.

The American Legion has been a Bay View fixture since the building was built on the hill overlooking Kinnickinnic Ave in 1947. Planners took pains to match the building’s original red brick with the new facade, making it look as it did when the building was erected. The building has been a gathering place for community events and houses a large upper meeting hall and full service restaurant, bar and hall for rent open to the public.

Construction of the addition was coordinated by the Handicap Access Committee , Chaired by Past Commander Greg Roth, with participation by members of the American Legion, Women’s Auxiliary and Son’s of the American Legion.  Architect design services were provided by Scott A. Brothen, of Tailored Places LTD, construction services by Kevin Kain, of Kain Construction.
